I wanted to take the time to welcome you to NorthstarGeek website/blog. I’m hoping to provide some cool projects and things that can help you out around the house or your small business. Life gets stressful, especially if you’ve got younger kids running around the house. Some of the projects I’ve done over the last couple years have helped reclaim some time back in our ever-busy lifestyles.
Just as examples, here are a few things I’ve got working successfully that absolutely work but can be tweaked to your needs:
- House Upper Level door and window sensors – For those young and curious individuals that like to leave the windows open with heatwaves going on outside while the air conditioner is running…
- Temp sensors to check what things look like around the house and creating “zones” – Again for those young folks that are too hot or too cold at strange times of the day…
- WiFi Control with Home Assistant and Ubiquiti network hardware – For turning off iPad’s, Xbox’s and smart TV’s…
- Token System for earned “Screen Time” – Also utilizing Home Assistant and Ubiquiti network hardware. Extremely useful during the school year….
- Home Entry and Exit notifications – For when you may not be home and you aren’t about to spend hundred of dollars a month on a full security system (though not a full drop in replacement for said hundreds of dollar system)…
- Climate controls for detached garage – Just to run fans to keep moisture off the floor and tools outside…
So just a small handful of the things I’ve used some home automation for.
Some other things I wanted to document and catalog are settings for a couple laser engravers I have and projects with a how-to on how to be successful and tweaked for your own needs.
